We ordered caterpillars from Insectlore. I used to get them for my classroom when I taught first grade, and I couldn't wait to share this experience with Pierce.
As you can see, Pierce was very excited about his caterpillars.
Pierce calls them "cowa piwas".
He insisted on eating with his caterpillars.
Each day, we looked at our caterpillars to see how much they'd grown.
Pierce began to notice caterpillars in his books so we put pictures up to feed off of his excitement.
He had a lot to say when he looked at them.
They formed their chrysalides.
We waited and waited and waited.
Pierce would say "shhhh" because they were sleeping.
We were excited that all five of the butterflies came out.
Pierce likes his "fuh flies"
He often asked to climb up on the stool to look at them.
His excitement gave me pure joy!
We fed them sugar water.
It's fun to see them from all angles.
He liked counting the butterflies.
It was time to release our butterflies.
We hated to let them go!
Pierce watched them fly out of the net.
The first two flew out quickly.
He was so interested in what was happening.
Daddy helped a butterfly out.
He passed it over to Pierce.
Pierce wasn't really sure what to do with it.
He took it from Daddy's hand, and he threw it.
The butterfly flew off, and Pierce was so excited. He kept saying, "more, more, more."
They tried it again.
Pierce was much more gentle this time. After the butterflies were gone, Pierce kept asking about them. This project was definitely a success! I can't wait to order more caterpillars!!!
